Intel promised us $100 tablets in time for the 2013 holiday season, and this Black Friday the chip-maker will outdo itself with a little help from HP and Walmart. The HP Mesquite 7-inch Android tablet will sell for just $89 this week on Black Friday, exclusively at Walmart.
It’s unclear if Walmart will sell these tablets at a loss, though based on the device’s mid to low-end specs there’s a good chance the mega retailer is still turning a profit. If the Mesquite is a success, we expect to see more tablets coming in at under $100 in the future. If the 7-inch slate doesn’t fly off the shelves on Black Friday, the retail chain will likely continue to sell its stock through the rest of the holiday season, though possibly at a slight markup.
The HP Mesquite comes equipped with a single-core 1.6 GHz Intel Atom Z2640 processor, a 7-inch 1024 x 600-pixel display, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of onboard storage. It also features a front-facing VGA camera, a microphone, speakers, a microUSB charging port, a battery offering approximately five hours per charge, and runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
If you want a tablet without breaking the bank, perhaps for younger kids, the $89 Mesquite could be a solid option.
