The special edition PRODUCT (RED) Mac Pro designed by Jony Ive and Marc Newson went up for auction at Sotherby’s last night and went for far more than the estimates had thought it would.

It was announced last month that Ive and Newson had created a special one off Mac Pro in a shade of red for a PRODUCT (RED) auction, and estimates had placed the closing price between $40,000 to $60,000. The final bid saw it hit a staggering $977,000. It was not the only product to sail past its estimates with a pair of rose gold Apple Ear Pods selling for $461,000, well above its estimate high of $25,000. The Leica M camera, that was also announced in Oct., had a very healthy estimate of $500,000 to $750,000, but that ended up going for a staggering $1.8 million.

It’s always wonderful to see people opening up their wallets for charity, and it sure appears that they opened them wide last night in New York.
