Facebook recently joined the GSM Association (GSMA), the global body of major wireless operators, developers, and mobile companies that throws the annual Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona. It’s particularly noteworthy that the social network is on board because of its increased reliance on mobile devices and users for growth.

Facebook has repeatedly stressed the importance that mobile will play in its business moving forward, and its most recent earnings gave us hard data that more users than ever are turning to mobile devices to use the social network. In Q3, for example, Facebook noted 874 million mobile monthly active users, a figure that was up 45 percent over the same period last year.

“Joining GSMA reflects our focus on mobile and our continued desire to work closely and collaboratively with partners in the industry, and we look forward to playing an active role as a member,” Facebook vice president of partnerships Dan Rose told FierceWireless. So can we expect Zuckerberg to deliver a keynote at a Mobile World Congress soon? Maybe just not yet, according to GSMA spokeswoman Claire Cranton, who noted that Facebook to do so. It wouldn’t be out of the question, Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley spoke last year.
