Infinity Ward Responds to Call of Duty Running 720p on Xbox One

The Xbox One received a lightning rod of criticism when Infinity Ward confirmed that the console’s version of Call of Duty: Ghosts would be running at a native 720p upscaled to 1080p. Since then, Series Producer Mark Rubin has stepped forward to clear the air regarding Microsoft’s newest machine.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Rubin stats that the decision to drop the resolution was only made one month ago even though the team started with 1080p dreams.

“Early on, we didn’t know where exactly the resolution of anything would fall because we didn’t have hardware or the software to support it,” Rubin explained. “We tried to focus in on 1080p, and if we felt like we were on borderline of performance somewhere… We tried to make the best decision for each platform that gives you the best-looking game we could get and maintains that 60 frames a second.

In fact, the reason doesn’t really land on any one specific issue with the console.

“There’s no specific, oh, well, the VO chat on Xbox took up so much resources that we couldn’t do 1080p native. There’s no definitive one to one per se cause and effect. It’s just an overall thing. We took each system individually and said, ‘okay, let’s make the best game for each system.'”

Despite the lack of any overlying problems, Rubin claimed that the game could run at native 1080p on the Xbox One, not calling into question the console’s power.

“It’s very possible we can get it to native 1080p. I mean I’ve seen it working at 1080p native. It’s just we couldn’t get the frame rate in the neighbourhood we wanted it to be. And it wasn’t a lack of effort. It wasn’t that it was like last minute. We had the theoretical hardware for a long time. That’s the thing you get pretty quickly and that doesn’t change dramatically.”

Since then, some have confirmed 1080p resolution on the Xbox One, like EA Sports was able to get with the upcoming UFC title, however, some of these are stuck with 30FPS.

Ultimately, the difference between 30FPS and 60FPS as well as 1080p and upscaled 720p will only be an issue to those who know about it beforehand. I doubt that this controversy is going to sway too many mass market buyers in their preferred console of choice, nor will it cause the major shifting of any online guilds or full time Call of Duty players.

Call of Duty: Ghosts will be available for the Wii U, PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 on November 5th. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions will be available at the consoles’ respective launches.
