Apple’s new iPad Air hit stores over the weekend, and according to AT&T it may be the company’s most successful tablet launch yet. The carrier revealed today that new iPad activations over the past three days were triple what the company saw last year with the iPad 4 launch, publishing the news in a press release.
AT&T pointed to consumer excitement over the iPad Air and its own popular Mobile Share plan as the primary reasons for the 200 percent increase in activations. The news is even more impressive considering that Apple still hasn’t released the iPad mini with Retina, while last year the company released the original iPad mini and iPad 4 at the same time.
Apple hasn’t announced how many iPad units it sold over the weekend yet, though last the year company moved over three million tablets in the three days following the iPad 4 and iPad mini’s release. Based on AT&T’s figures, the carrier alone may have sold over nine million tablets, with the iPad Air making up most sales while the original iPad mini and iPad 2 account for the remaining activated units.
