Google has inadvertently set off a storm of speculation this weekend as an unknown tablet has appeared on its official Android site.

After the first appearance of the Nexus 5 popping up in a Google video, you would think the company might go over its official media assets a bit more. Perhaps it is doing this on purpose, we don’t know, but a new mystery has been set up now thanks to the Android page being updated for Android 4.4 KitKat.

In a section named “A library that goes with you,” a woman is seen holding a smallish tablet while perusing the Google Play Store. It is clearly not the Nexus 7 – the top bezel is far too small – and it is definitely not a Nexus 10. Some speculation is running to it potentially being an unannounced Nexus 8. You can click on the image at the bottom to see the full-sized version of the pic to do your own sleuthing.

What jumps out at me and makes me think this is some sort of generic mock-up tablet is the lack of a forward facing camera being visible on the device. Potentially it was edited out for some unknown reason.

There is nothing saying that this is an actual product in development, but considering companies know how people pour over these sorts of tidbits, you have to wonder if this was done on purpose.

Let us know what you think. Could Google be working with a company to make a third tablet size?
