EA had been taking another swing at the Command and Conquer series with a free-to-play spin on the legendary franchise, but as of this week, that project has ceased production and the development team behind it, Victory Games, has been disbanded.
A full statement on the cancellation of the game can be seen at the Command and Conquer official webpage, thanking the alpha testers of the game for their contributions. Victory Games blames a lack of focus on the single player campaign and fans pushing back against the more multiplayer outlook for its ultimate demise.
Thank you for your participation over the last few months in the Command & Conquer closed alpha test. It’s been much appreciated, and you’ve been instrumental in helping define what a new Command & Conquer experience should and shouldn’t be.
Part of being in a creative team is the understanding that not all of your choices are going to work out. In this case, we shifted the game away from campaign mode and built an economy-based, multiplayer experience. Your feedback from the alpha trial is clear: We are not making the game you want to play. That is why, after much difficult deliberation, we have decided to cease production of this version of the game. Although we deeply respect the great work done by our talented team, ultimately it’s about getting you the game you expect and deserve.

We believe that Command & Conquer is a powerful franchise with huge potential and a great history, and we are determined to get the best game made as soon as possible. EA confirmed in a statement to Polygon that Victory Games will not remain together. “The team at Victory Games will be disbanded. Wherever possible, we are working to help these talented people find other opportunities within EA.”
Command and Conquer is often seen at the poster-child for series gone bad back during EA’s acquisition days. Creator Westwood Studios was bought out in 1998, but in all fairness, plenty of highs have been seen since then. It’s hardly the bleak picture fans like to paint, with some successes as recent as 2008 with the surprise hit Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 which was made by EA Los Angeles.
A true game in the series has not been seen since 2010’s Command and Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight, which was not well received by fans. This latest game was powered by the Frostbite 3 engine and was supposed to take the series back to its roots with no population limits.
Strategy games are far under-represented these days on the grand scale of video games, but 2K Games proved that hits can be made with the likes of XCOM Enemy Unknown. Let’s just hope that whatever future plans EA has in stock for Command and Conquer, it has learned from the mistakes it made with Syndicate and won’t force remodel it into a generic first-person shooter. C&C is a little too high profile for such a re-imaging.
