Google is quickly running out of time if it plans to launch Android 4.4 KitKat and the Nexus 5 by the end of the month, but a brief update on Google+ from Vic Gundotra, VP of Software Engineering, has some industry watchers thinking the company may be on the verge of a big announcement. In a post tagging Android and Chrome head Sundar Pichai, Gundotra hinted last night that he was too excited to sleep, possibly because of a very big announcement coming this week or even later today.
In the past, Google has given us at least or day or two of notice before dropping any massive news. When the company unveiled the updated Nexus 7, Android 4.3 and the Chromecast, it sent out invitations to a press event a week in advance. We’re not expecting any big news out of Mountain View today, though we wouldn’t rule out a special event for later this week.
Besides the much-leaked Nexus 5 smartphone and Android KitKat 4.4 OS, there are a few other products Google may have up its sleeve. We’re about due for a refreshed Nexus 10 tablet, likely built by Asus based on recent leaks. Then there’s the mysterious Google Watch, code-named Gem, which may also make an appearance.
We’re getting a little tired of all of these teasers, so hopefully Google makes something official really soon.
