Hangouts for iOS Adds Google Voice Integration; Android Left Behind

Ahead of Google’s own Android app, Hangouts for iOS on Friday was updated with support for Google Voice integration, allowing users to receive and make outgoing calls to folks across the U.S. and Canada. A pretty terrific addition, actually, and one that further pushes Google’s young messaging platform into the big leagues.

It’s strange to see such a feature hit a competing platform before Google’s own blood, but, if it’s any consolation, it looks like Hangouts is going to get SMS/MMS integration once Android 4.4 KitKat rolls around—whenever that will be. In addition to Voice integration, Hangouts for iOS also introduces animated GIF support and other bug fixes and enhancements.
