BlackBerry may be circling the drain as a smartphone company, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been home to thousands of top notch employees. Apple knows this and, following a round of recent layoffs, the company is swooping in to try to pick up some of Waterloo’s top talent.

According to the Financial Post, Apple recently held recruitment meetings inside the Cambridge Hotel not far from BlackBerry’s headquarters, with the aim of grabbing current and past BlackBerry employees. The new hires would need to trade in jeans for shorts, however, as Apple is requiring all potential hires to move down to its Cupertino headquarter.

We wouldn’t be surprised to see some employees end up at other competitors. Samsung has long been poaching employees from BlackBerry, and Google seems like another natural destination that may come calling.
