Larger iPad and iPhone Models Due for Launch in 2014, Says Report

Rumors have circulated for some time now that Apple is experimenting with larger iPad and iPhone screens, and a new report indicates the units may arrive next year.

According to a new report from David Hsieh of DisplaySearch, a check of the display supply chain indicates that Apple is working on numerous upgrades to its display technologies for 2014 along with the addition of some new products.

We’ve heard that Apple is testing multiple sizes of iPhone for some time now, and according to this research note it may be moving ahead with 4.7 and 5.7-inch versions of its phone for the iPhone 6. The oddity here is that it suggests the phones could launch in the second quarter of the year which would place it somewhere between April and June, meaning it will have only been six to nine months since the introduction of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. We’ve seen Apple do rapid upgrades before, but it has been some time since it has pulled such a maneuver.

On the tablet front, Hsieh says that the iPad 5 will sport a 9.7-inch display at 2048×1536, and the iPad mini 2 will cram the same resolution into its 7.9-inch screen with both due for release this quarter. This lines up with the Oct. 22 iPad event we’ve heard about recently, and seems spot on. Where things become a little odd is he indicates that Apple is on track to release a 12.9-inch tablet sometime in 2014 with a resolution of 2732×2048. We had heard a rumor earlier this year of such a device, but most news outlets, TechnoBuffalo included, labeled it as silly. Here it is again, however, making us once again wonder.

Rounding out the updates to products currently on the market, the research note indicates that the MacBook Air will receive an update at some point in 2014 for a 12-inch model with a resolution of 2304×1440. This isn’t too surprising as Apple seems to be moving towards higher resolution displays on all of its products.

In the realm of products that Apple has yet to even confirm it is working on, Hsieh says there are indications that the long fabled Apple television set will launch in the third quarter of 2014 in both 55 and 65-inch models with resolutions of 4Kx2K at 120Hz. He also indicates that the iWatch is in the works for the fourth quarter of next year with a flexible AMOLED display at 1.3 and 1.6-inches with a resolution of 320×320. Both of these items should be taken with a grain of salt at this time, especially the TV as those rumors have been around for several years now.

Checks of the supply chain are always dicey, and Apple could change its mind on any of these updates and new products at any time. Apple has always had a passion for improving its displays, however, so none of these seem too out of the realm of reason to be true.
