Assassin’s Creed IV “The Heist” Trailer – Gaming Gone Hollywood

If games are supposed to overtake Hollywood sometime in the next ten years, then there is no shame in jumping the gun and making trailers that look like they come straight from the big studios themselves. Ubisoft is all over this trend so much so that you’d think this latest trailer for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is the trailer for the upcoming film instead of the game.

I don’t just mean the overabundance of flashy action and glorified murder, either. The one liners tailor-made for trailers, the repeated fade to blacks amongst loud sound effects, the slow motion sped up to fast in an instant, and the methodical reveal of the characters: this is everything you’d see in a Marvel superhero film or any other major Hollywood series these days, set to one of gaming’s biggest icons of this generation.

That’s okay, because of all the frequently released AAA franchises out there, none have been able to walk the tight balance between mass market big budget and a more serious gamer friendly experience than Assassin’s Creed. The series keeps enough familiar from entry to entry, but still manages to be fresh with each release.

If there is one thing that I’ve always found lacking in the series, it’s solid characters. Grand Theft Auto often sets the bar quite high for stunning, original fresh faces to interact with in its sandbox. It might be difficult to match given that it’s hard to break the pirate mold, but this colorful group of marauders might be a step in the right direction. Who doesn’t love a good solid cast of seafaring dogs?

Expect cutthroat pirates, ruthless red coat opposition, some noble faces, fiery red-headed Irish women, a bearded pirate who reminds me of LeChuck, and more scalawags and swashbuckling than you can shake a Jolly Roger at.

Ubisoft also released a batch of screenshots which includes fun activities like diving for treasure with sharks, swordplay, naval battles, and, of course, wrestling with alligators. Yikes! See the gallery below.

Assassin’s Creed IV will be launching for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U on Oct. 29. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions will follow on the consoles’ respective release dates, and the PC version will be available on Nov. 19.
