PlayStation 2 Classic of the Week – Fatal Frame III: The Tormented

The last of Tecmo’s trilogy of PlayStation 2 horror games makes its way onto the PlayStation Store this week. Fatal Frame III: The Tormented joins its predecessors for $9.99, if anyone is interested in closing the gap and completing their virtual shelves.

I have not played this game yet, but I had a blast trouncing through Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly when it was released a few months ago. Even with the graphical glitches, which Sony went back and patched up, it was still a fright fest from beginning to end and one of the scariest games I have ever played.

Put some headphones on and only play at night. You won’t sleep for a week!

General fan reaction seems to put Fatal Frame III a peg or two below Fatal Frame II. Less scary, less interesting story, weaker controls. Still a fun experience, but all around not on the grand scale of the previous game which set a high mark to reach.

With all three Fatal Frame games on the PlayStation 2 released on modern consoles, fans are now eagerly awaiting Nintendo to localize Fatal Frame 4, which ended up on the Wii and under Nintendo’s publication rights. I’d hate to say it, but its pretty late in the game and most likely not happening. Nintendo owns a large portion of the series and is more focused on getting the Wii U off the ground.

Fatal Frame III: The Torment will be available when the PlayStation Store updates this Wednesday.
