Legacy of Kain Returns in Free-to-Play Multiplayer Game “Nosgoth”

Rumors about a new game in the popular vampire series Legacy of Kain have been swirling for quite some time now, and Square Enix finally has something to say about the anticipated reboot know now as Nosgoth.

If you are looking to continue the struggle between Kain and Raziel or for a chance to jump back into a Crystal Dynamics game, don’t get your hopes up too high. Nosgoth is not your daddy’s Legacy of Kain, but rather it is a spin-off free-to-play multiplayer game from Psyonix Studios, a team who has pitched in on Bulletstorm, Homefront, and other Unreal Engine projects.

Humans and vampires continue their eternal struggle by taking their battles to the fields and ruins of Nosgoth, the land once ruled by the vampire lord Kain. Humans are no longer weak prey to the vampires and have learned to fight back, mostly through guns and a wide assortment of ranged attacks.

Vampires are never ones to be outclassed by humans and have adapted to this new weaponry by climbing buildings and pouncing on people unexpectedly from above. The stealth vs range creates a balanced dynamic giving both teams a chance to win.

I’m quite sure this is not what a lot of Legacy of Kain fans have in mind, but remember that Legacy of Kain: Defiance pretty much wrapped up the story of Raziel and Kain. There is no going back to the good old days. This might be a free-to-play cash in on a popular series loosely tied to its roots by name only, but it is probably the only viable way Square Enix would ever bring back Kain to the forefront given the performance of its recent Eidos titles.

Don’t write this off totally just yet, but don’t dwell on it either. It could be worth checking out for free. Those wanting to play early can sign up for the closed beta at the game’s official website.
