BlackBerry Says BBM for iOS and Android Unlikely This Week

BlackBerry Live 2013 - BBM App - 007

Prospective BBM users on iOS and Android are being told by BlackBerry not to expect the client anytime soon. The Waterloo company on Monday gave an update on BBM’s botched launched, again blaming an older leaked version of the Android app as the problem. The failed launch preceded Monday’s news of an accepted $4.7 billion buyout led by Fairfax Financial Holdings.

According to BlackBerry, the older Android app “resulted in volumes of data traffic orders of magnitude higher than normal for each active user and impacted the system in abnormal ways.” The version BlackBerry was supposed to release on Saturday apparently partly addressed the problem, but BlackBerry was unable to figure out how to block those using the unreleased version before an official launch went through.

BlackBerry said active users of the unreleased app quickly reached a million (and beyond) before something could be done, so the company made the decision to stop everything altogether. As of now, the official rollout is on pause, and the company doesn’t expect that to change this week. It’s unclear when a new launch date will be announced, or even how long until the issue is rectified.

“The team is now focused on adjusting the system to completely block this unreleased version of the Android app,” the company said. We are also making sure that the system is reinforced to handle this kind of scenario in the future.”

As one of BlackBerry’s last remaining untarnished characteristics, it’s disappointing to hear the launch was (supposedly) bungled because of some overzealous Android users. Hopefully the issue can be resolved soon, and BBM is once and for all available outside of BlackBerry’s own backyard.
