Flashback Friday: iPhone 3G

With the iPhone 5c and 5s now out in the world, lets take a look back at the first time the iPhone ever had an upgrade.

Last week we looked at the iPhone 3GS to cover the addition of “s” to an iPhone name, but this week I wanted to jump back to the iPhone being upgraded at all. Oh look, it got 3G! And I love how third-party apps being added is mentioned in such a nonchalant way. If anyone had known what that would end up growing in to.

It’s easy to look back and giggle a bit at the iPhone 3G, but there is no denying this was a turning point in the iPhone history. Only one year into the product’s life and things were already taking shape. It always amazed me how people were caught off-guard by the addition of apps. Did no one ever notice the black space in the last row with enough room for two more icons? There was always black space on the screen, did no one ever think there would finally be something to fill it up?

Love it or hate it, the iPhone changed the cell phone market, and it’s here for a long time to come. It will some day taper off as all products do, and at that point these videos really well turn in to nostalgia.
