Earlier today we covered a rumor that suggested Apple was working on a new software update for existing Apple TV units. The update would allow you to play your media on TV’s that you don’t own, like a friend’s or a family member’s set, and may actually pull data from the cloud instead of from your device. Apparently Apple has much bigger plans than that, though.
TechCrunch’s MG Siegler saw that story and replied with his own commentary. “I guess those excited about a software refresh in a week are gonna be *really* excited when new Apple TV hardware is unveiled next month,” he said. Another popular Apple journalist, Mark Gurman from 9to5Mac, tweeted that he has heard not to buy an Apple TV, to which Siegler responded, “probably good advice.”
Siegler is suggesting that Apple is going to discuss the Apple TV during another rumored press event next month, during which the company will also likely address its iPad portfolio and OS X Mavericks.
Siegler didn’t hint at what we can expect from the box, so it’s all up in the air at this point. Price is going to be key, the cast is an amazing little gadget and only costs $35, about a third of the price of the Apple TV.
