Microsoft will announce new Surface tablets during a press event that will be held in New York City on September 23. Microsoft has long been rumored to have new devices coming down the pipeline, including some possibly with smaller displays in the 7-inch to 8-inch range, and we just received an invite to the event.

We imagine at least one of the tablets will run Microsoft’s new Windows 8.1 operating system and an Intel processor. It may also introduce a second-generation Surface RT product running on NVIDIA’s new Tegra 4 processor and with a higher-resolution display. The first generation Surface RT product didn’t sell well at all – in fact Microsoft made too many and lost a lot of money on the device, so the company is going to have to show consumers what it has done to improve the experience. Changes to the kickstand could be a start, and we’ve also heard rumors of a new keyboard that will provide additional battery life.

Who knows, maybe Nokia will unveil its Windows RT device during the event, too? In any case, Microsoft will need to take this time to draw excitement around its platform, which has otherwise felt rather boring compared to iOS and Android. Apple will take the stage tomorrow to unveil its new iPhones, and is expected to also unveil new iPads as soon as October. Time is ticking, Microsoft. TechnoBuffalo will be reporting from the event, stay tuned.
