Apple’s upcoming iPad refresh will see a significantly smaller form factor without sacrificing screen real estate. According to a video from UnboxTherapy, the new tablet will feature a similar design to the iPad mini—rounded curves, minimal side bezel, chamfered edges and new speaker grilles—confirming months of speculation about Apple’s upcoming refresh. If this leak turns out to be true, this will be the most remarkable design change Apple’s big tablet has ever seen.
Something that’s immediately noticeable is how narrow the new iPad is compared to the most recent generation. Like the iPad mini, the iPad 5 has little side bezel but keeps that same 9.7-inch screen; the current iPad measures in at 18.5 cm wide, while the new iPad will supposedly come in at 17 cm, significantly narrower than what’s available now. The new device will be thinner, too, but that difference isn’t quite as striking as how much more narrow the new iPad appears to be.
Compared to Apple’s iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S leaks, we haven’t seen too much of the company’s iPad 5. It’s been a long time since we’ve actually seen Apple refresh its tablet lineup, but it definitely looks like that’s going to change. We saw a leaked image of a supposed iPad 5 earlier this year, along with a set of alleged schematics, so we already had a pretty good idea this year’s model would be a lot different from previous iterations. If the parts in this video are legit, that definitely seems to be the case.
Apple has an iPhone event planned for next week, though the company is expected to hold a separate iPad event—exactly when is unclear. Production seems to be in full swing, however, so I imagine an announcement is imminent.
