Uber, the popular but sometimes controversial San Francisco-based e-hailing app is launching a massive promotion in Brooklyn this weekend, offering New Yorkers $40 in free rides in, out or around the borough. The company has also partnered with tons of local business to offer discounts and freebies when you show them your Uber receipt.

So here’s how it works. Open up your Uber app, or download and install it if you haven’t already, and enter “BKLOVESuberX” in the promo code box. Next, slide the car type selector to uberX, the app’s cheapest option, and starting hailing. Each user gets $20 off on the first two rides they take that either begin or end in Brooklyn starting at noon today through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday.

While Uber has faced legal troubles on the West coast, the app has quickly taken off in NY as an alternative to official yellow taxis, which aren’t always as reliable, especially if you’re in Brooklyn or any of the other outer boroughs.
