Microsoft is set to slash the price on its Surface tablet Touch Cover from $119.99 to $79.99 starting on Aug.t 1, according to a new report from WPCentral. The website has obtained an internal screenshot suggesting the price drop will be permanent for the thin and spill-resistant protective screen cover-tablet keyboard hybrid.

WPCentral also notes that there is no indication Microsoft will institute a similar price cut for the Type Cover, a slightly more bulky design that includes a physical keyboard and trackpad and currently costs $129.99. Both Surface covers were launched last year, and are featured heavily in ad campaigns promoting the Surface. The Type Cover, in our experience with both, is much better for actually typing.

The news follows Microsoft’s decision to drastically slash the Surface RT price from $499 to $349 in a move confirming suspicions that the tablet had been a flop for the Seattle-based company. The Surface Pro’s price was also cut by $100, indicating that Microsoft may be desperate to move its inventory and suggesting that a type cover price drop could be in the works as well.
