LG was holding events in several international cities highlighting its new G2 flagship Android smartphone, but it seems that the crowds were a bit too excited. Apparently 20 people were hurt during an event in a park north of Seoul, South Korea, during which LG promised to give away coupons for a free G2.
“We canceled events offering free G2 smartphones that had been scheduled in major cities nationwide, including Busan, due to safety concerns,” a spokesperson told The Korea Times.
Apparently the coupons were attached to balloons and, in an effort to get the coupons faster, festival goers were shooting down the balloons with BB guns. It’s unclear if the 20 people injured were hurt by the BB guns or if they were trampled by crowds running to grab the free coupons as they fell from the sky. However, security was a concern. “As far as I know, there were only some 20 security guards,” one person said, noting that LG should have prepared for larger crowds.
LG promised to pay for medical treatment for those who were injured. The G2 will launch on all four major wireless carriers in the U.S. and around the globe in the coming weeks and months.
