Apple will most probably release a cheaper iPhone this year, likely called iPhone 5C, and well before its official unveiling we’re getting yet another look at what the device will look like. Identical to the many other leaks we’ve seen this year, the images show off what appears to be the rear casing in mid-production (not all buttons are punched out just yet), so this isn’t quite final.
The device itself looks great despite being made of plastic, with nice rounded edges and a mixture of past iPhone designs. Apple has built a reputation for building premium handsets—most apparent with the iPhone 5—though this would appear to be a step in a different direction. The iPhone maker has used plastic before—iPhone 3G/3GS, MacBook, etc.—so it’s definitely familiar with the material, but this will definitely be a change of pace for a company so in love with aluminum.
There’s not much here that we haven’t already seen. We’re expecting the device to be unveiled in September, meaning we have only a month or so to go until the iPhone 5C becomes official. Given the frequency of leaks thus far, we’d expect more information about Apple’s cheaper iPhone to hit before an official event. Hopefully by then we’ll know more important details, such as specs and price.
