We recently received our Chromecast device and, while we’re really enjoying the experience from a $35 dongle, it’s still pretty limited right now. Out of the box you can really only stream YouTube clips, Google Play Movies or Netflix from a smartphone or tablet. If you’re on a computer you can do a bit more thanks to Chrome tab support. New apps are coming, though.
GigaOm said it talked to Redbox and Vimeo, both of which confirmed that support is coming in the near future. “We’re excited about the emerging opportunities bridging mobile to Connected TV and we look forward to offering Chromecast support in our products,” Vimeo vice president of mobile Nick Alt said. Meanwhile, Plex also said that it has ordered a Chromecast, which suggests vaguely that it’s also working on support. HBO is also allegedly working on building Chromecast functionality into its apps.
We can’t wait to see what developers make available in the future. The device is already quite amazing at its price point and, while there are natural limitations, we think the development community really has a ton of potential to make it even more valuable.
