Following the release of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS yesterday by Google, Sony published a quick update on its blog this morning revealing plans for upgrading the Xperia series of smartphones and tablets. While most devices are still receiving Android 4.2, the newest members of the Xperia family will eventually get Android 4.3, while some may get upgraded directly from 4.1.
The flagship waterproof Xperia Z and the Xperia ZL are already in the process of receiving Android 4.2, and will likely have to wait a bit for the next update. Meanwhile, the Xperia ZR and Tablet Z are next in line for Android 4.2, and should receive the update in early August. Sony also notes that it’s “already getting stuck in” for the 4.3 update, which will be available for the entire series including the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP and Xperia Z Ultra.
Finally, the Japanese tech giant hints that it’s looking into “uplifting” some of its devices straight from Android 4.1 to 4.3. With most of the series already accounted for that leaves the Xperia SP, which may get to skip over Android 4.2, and the Z Ultra phablet which is still unreleased and may come with Android 4.3 out of the box.
