Google acquired Waze last month, though the company didn’t say how much it paid for the social traffic application at the time. Now that number has been revealed: $966 million. The purchase price was disclosed in documents that Google had to provide for government regulators, AP said, and it falls slightly below estimates that Google paid $1 billion for Waze.
Apple was apparently also interested in buying Waze at some point, perhaps earlier this year or late in 2012, though apparently Waze wasn’t interested in selling at the time. At least not to Apple, that is. Recent patent filings have suggested that Apple is interested in creating a competitor for the service on iOS, however, that would provide data from other iOS devices sitting in traffic.
Google is currently letting Waze operate as it always has, though we do hope it makes an appearance inside Android at some point. It could be an awesome option to enable inside Google Maps, for example, to see current traffic conditions based on what other drivers are reporting. Google Maps provides traffic already, but it’s not social.
