We’re pretty confident at this point that the refreshed iPhone Apple is set to unveil this fall (likely called the iPhone 5S) will look just like the iPhone 5 with a few minor improvements, including a redesigned CPU and iOS 7 out of the box, but the iPhone 6 remains a mystery. Apple’s next big smartphone upgrade won’t arrive until 2014, and although we don’t expect much beyond a minimal redesign and a bigger screen it’s always fun to imagine that a new handset could be a huge game changer.
That’s exactly what designer Pritesh Chavan has done with this new set of iPhone 6 concept images, which envision a foldable device that can transform from a standard 4.2-inch smartphone to 5.8-inch phablet and then to a 7.5-inch tablet. The imaginary smartphone also features booming speaker grills, super strong graphene and a flat design to match iOS 7.
We’re practically drooling over these pictures of an iPhone that can transform seamlessly into an iPad Mini-sized tablet, but the simple truth is that the technology for foldable smartphones just isn’t there yet. We’ve all seen flexible displays before, but until companies can manufacture flexible batteries and processors as well it remains a fantasy. 2014 may be pushing it, but hopefully one day in the not-too-distant future Chavan’s dream can become a reality.
