Verizon HTC One may get Android 4.2.2 Out of the Box

We still don’t know when the HTC One will land on Verizon, but we’ve got a bit of good news for those of you who may have to wait until early August or even September to get your hands on the aluminum handset. According to prominent HTC leaker @LlabTooFeR, the smartphone will land on Verizon’s network running Android 4.2.2, unlike earlier versions of the One that sport the 4.1.2 out of the box.

Verizon confirmed it would get the HTC One back in June, but still hasn’t revealed when the device will be available. However, the company recently announced a press event scheduled for July 23, so it’s possible we’ll learn more then.

Meanwhile, for smartphone users lucky enough to already own an HTC One, @LlabTooFeR had a second morsel of news, shooting down rumors that the handset will directly upgrade from Android 4.1 to Android 4.3. This isn’t much of surprise, considering Google’s upcoming mobile OS update is expected to be relatively minor, there’s no reason any OEM’s would throw out the work they’ve done preparing to upgrade their devices to Android 4.2 and start fresh.

Android 4.2.2 is already available for the HTC One in a number of regions around the world and is expected to arrive in the U.S. in the very near future. The update not only brings new features from Google, but also includes improvements to HTC’s own Zoe and Sense 5 apps. We’ll need to wait for U.S. carriers to approve the update first, though, and there’s no saying how long that will take.
