Apple has filed for a trademark request in Japan for the “iWatch,” described as a “handheld computer” or “watch device.” The application was received on June 3rd, and the Japan Patent Office has just made the record public.

An application for the iWatch was already made in Russia also on June 3rd, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see similar trademark applications pop up in other countries around the world. The 100+ man development team behind the project is rumored to have a launch for the iWatch planned for 2014.

These trademark applications are starting to show the next big battleground for technology giants. Sony recently announced its second generation SmartWatch 2 and rumors are surfacing for an Android based smartwatch coming directly from Google.
