The design of Apple’s iOS 7 introduces a lot of changes to the UI outside of the different icons. Fonts are different, icons are different, and the overall look is in stark contrast to Scott Forstall’s analog vision. That won’t just affect the stock experience on iOS, but how third-party applications are designed going forward. As you can tell in the mockups above, some of the more popular apps could potentially look much different from the ethos currently pervading iOS.
Instagram, Skype and WhatsApp in particular look much different, with brighter colors and flatter surfaces more in line with Jony Ive’s vision for iOS 7. The experiences are still familiar—there’s just a lot less shadows and skeuomorphic ideals. Keep in mind, however, these are mock-ups and are not official by any means at this point.
Whether consumers at large will appreciate the redesigned OS remains to be seen—it’s certainly a jarring new look, especially for anyone who has used iOS for many years.
