Hideo Kojima has revealed in an interview with Gamesreactor UK that he is considering finding a studio to remake his classic stealth action game Metal Gear Solid using the Fox Engine that will power Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
Silicon Knights already remade the game once for the GameCube back in 2004 with Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes. It was widely praised for upgrading the graphics and implementing the gameplay of Metal Gear Solid 2 into the original experience. However, soulless voice acting and ridiculous martial-arts action cutscenes drained much of the humanity from the story.
Kojima knows that modern day Metal Gear Solid mechanics would force him to completely restructure the game, but he’s not even sure if the game could possibly work in the modern age.
“It was a game made for a certain era — not just the story, but the controls and everything about it reflect that era in which the game was made.”
I won’t give him the story being dated, since Metal Gear Solid can still be enjoyed immensely in its original form. However, the storytelling might need a little reworking since the 30 minute codec conversations and extended stock footage used to tell stories is no longer in fashion.
The gameplay would also need to be revamped of course; but, the length? Without the cutscenes, Metal Gear Solid can be beaten in roughly three hours if you know what you are doing, far too short for what gamers are willing to shell out $40 for these days, let alone $60.
In regards to the confusing announcements of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Hideo Kojima explained that he was pressured to announce them out of order because of the series’ 25th anniversary.
