Those of you looking to pick up an Apple smartphone may want to head to the closest Walmart starting today. The monolithic retailer has slashed the price of the iPhone 4S from $89.97 to $39, and the iPhone 5 has been reduced from $189.97 to $129. The prices are available only in-store and they do require signing a two-year contract with AT&T, Sprint or Verizon.
According to statements from Walmart, the price cuts are permanent. This can be read one of two ways: Either Walmart wants to clean out some of the stock prior to the inevitable release of the next iteration of the phone, or it is simply finding the iPhone landscape is becoming more competitive. As more and more carriers and retailers have begun carrying the device, competition has made it tougher to sell. The price cuts here are definitely significant on the upfront portion of your purchase, but of course you will still be paying for it over the next two years by being on contract.
Will it be enough to lure some more signups at Walmart? More than likely.
