Samsung gave us our first up-close look at the Galaxy S4 Active recently. The device is a rugged Galaxy S4 variant that boasts resistance to water and dust. The new smartphone is designed for the outdoorsy type who still needs access to a powerful handset with top-notch specs and an extra layer of protection.
The Galaxy S4 Active was officially announced earlier this month, and the handset is just as durable as promised without sacrificing look or feel. Holding the device, it feels like a slightly heavier Galaxy S4 with a thin rubber case wrapped around it. However, while the Active may be protected from dust and water, the screen appears to be just as vulnerable as the S4’s, so you may need to slip on a case if you’re prone to dropping your smartphone. It’s made of Gorilla Glass, however, so you won’t have to worry as much about scratches.
Samsung’s promise that the Galaxy S4 Active can be submerged in water without being damaged wasn’t a lie. The handset reportedly lasts 30 minutes underwater, and although we didn’t test it for a full half hour, the device definitely went in and out of a fish bowl still working perfectly. While submerged, the touchscreen stays on but won’t respond to taps or gestures. However, you can still take a photo using the volume control buttons, which activate the camera while underwater.
