Say what you will about the Late Night landscape, but Jimmy Fallon has definitely carved out a niche for himself. One of the ways Jimmy differentiates himself from the late night vets is through video games. This week on Late Night, it’s Video Game Week. Last night, Jimmy had Microsoft’s Phil Spencer (good decision, Don Mattrick needs to be put on ice for a bit) to show off Killer Instinct and Forza Motorsport 5.
Interestingly, neither game was played with the new controller, one of the system’s selling points. I think this was a bit of a misstep. While the arcade stick and racing wheel might’ve been more fun from a theatrics standpoint, I know Jimmy would’ve had something to say about the new Impulse Triggers as he played Forza Motorsport 5. It makes the games look less accessible, too, to people who might think of getting the system for their kids. Who wants to buy a thing that needs a racing wheel and these huge arcade sticks?
That said, it’s still very cool to see Jimmy putting games up front like this. Aside from the Xbox One demos, tonight’s show also featured a segment of some crazy old games (including Captain Novolin the diabetic superhero and Revolution X featuring Aerosmith) and a performance by the video game-punk fusion group Anamanaguchi. Throughout the week, the show will feature demos of of the PlayStation 4 and Knack, Watch_Dogs, Call of Duty: Ghosts, and the Wii U’s upcoming Super Mario 3D World.
If you missed Monday night’s show, the LNJF website has clips for streaming.
