BlackBerry is stepping up smartphone production according to a DigiTimes source in the Canadian’s company’s supply chain. The firm is reportedly upping its orders for parts including small-size LCD displays.

The latest rumor follows reports that BlackBerry sales for its Q10 and Z10 smartphones (but particularly the QWERTY keyboard Q10) have been stronger then expected, boosting the company’s market perception. BlackBerry is estimated to ship 30-40 million units this year.

A number of component suppliers in Taiwan reportedly believe that BlackBerry is looking to expand its smartphone offerings, possibly by introducing a budget-friendly or mid-range handset exclusively in emerging markets. However, DigiTimes and its sources have a mixed track record when it comes to predicting mobile news, so these reports should not be taken as fact, and BlackBerry still sells its older models in emerging markets.
