Flashback Friday: Microsoft in the 90s

Flashback FridayI was in my 20s for the vast majority of the 1990s, and one thing I never understood, even at the time, was the cheesy humor in promo videos. I had my own business at the time so I was constantly receiving promotional videos for this and that, and for some reason companies always felt the need to inject “humor” in to them that always came off to me as flat or outright annoying.

Luckily I was never subjected to the Microsoft video included in this post.

When Windows 95 was on the horizon, it was going to be a massive shift for the average computer user. Moving from Windows 3.1 and DOS to the Windows 95 interface was jarring, but it also meant a need for lots of new software. This promotional video was sent out to excite retailers not only about the upcoming releases they could sell along with fresh copies of the new OS, but also the ergonomic keyboard.

Say what you will about Microsoft, love them or hate them, they do make some pretty nice peripherals – I’m typing this on a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 at the moment.

Luckily we don’t see many videos such as this these days, unless of course you happen to be in India and you see the bizarre introduction for the Samsung Galaxy S4. Let us hope that isn’t a sign of things to come.
