iPad 5 production could start as soon as July with early trials kicking off even sooner according to the latest rumor from DigiTimes. The site’s sources within Taiwan’s supply chain said Apple is gearing up to ship out two to three million new tablets by Sept. 2013.
The latest report on the iPad 5 supports earlier rumors that the fifth-generation tablet will be slimmer, at least 25 percent lighter, and will feature a thinner frame around the touch screen as well as just a single LED light bar for backlighting as opposed to the iPad 4’s dual LED light bars.
However, according to DigiTimes’ source, the iPad 5’s screen will have the same pixel density as the fourth generation tablet:
The display of the new iPad, which will hit market shelves as early as September, will still be a 2,048 x 1,536 Retina display, the same as the one used in the 4th-generation model, except that the new display is built on a glass substrate of 0.2mm, thinner than the 0.25mm one for the 4th-generation device, the sources said, adding the new tablet will have a narrow bezel.
DigiTimes’ sources aren’t always dead-on, however, so we’re still a little skeptical on this report.
