Verizon Wireless announced this week that it’s cranking things up a few notches for its prepaid customers.
In this case, “things” equals “data,” as current customers will now get unlimited voice and texting with 2 GB of data for $60 a month. Previously, the plan capped usage at 500 MB monthly. Customers willing to spend a little more can get 4 GB of data, up from 2 GB, in addition to unlimited voice and texting for $70.
The new pricing/data tiers are available to existing customers now. New customers will be able to get in on the act starting June 6.
This could be a response to AT&T’s new pre-paid arm, Aio Wireless, which was launched last week. Aio will open in select markets in Florida, with three more due to open soon. The $40 basic plan, with 250 MB of data, is aimed at feature phone users, while the $55 Smart plan offers up to 2 GB of data for smartphone users. There’s also a $70 Pro tier that allows up to 7 GB of data. All come with unlimited voice and texting, and all stated allotments represent data limits capped by throttling.
