Ubisoft is not as confident in the success of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag as one would think after predicting it would come up short of Assassin Creed III‘s runaway sales figures.
CEO Yves Guillemot stated in a post-earnings call that they are not expecting annual releases to increase sales of its flagship franchise, and he does not think the feat is repeatable despite the new pirate setting being more internationally accessible than the American Revolution.
“We are actually pushing to achieve more than last year because we think the pirate segment is a great segment that can generate a lot more on a worldwide basis than what was achieved last year. But we wanted to be prudent on our expectations so that it can probably be a bonus if it comes.”
Assassin’s Creed III received a lot of praise for reinventing the series during the initial days of its marketing, but it was released to only a lukewarm reception from the public. Despite that, it still sold an impressive 12.5 million units worldwide since launch last October.
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will be launching on the PC, Wii U, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It is also the first time the series will be available on next-generation technology as it will be a launch title for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 360’s successor.
The major shift in console generations this year has made a lot of publishers skeptical on sales figures, so Ubisoft is not the only one holding back. Activision is also carefully approaching the new Call of Duty: Ghost games, which it feels will come up short on Black Ops 2.
