Google on Thursday confirmed adding SMS integration to Hangouts, the company’s new unified messaging platform, is a top priority. In a Google+ post, the search giant’s Dori Storbeck, Community Manager for Hangouts and Chat, said a lot of the feedback surrounding Hangouts has been about SMS, and that the day-old app should see integration relatively soon.
Hangouts only just came out for the Web, Android and iOS following Google’s I/O event Wednesday, and we already took the app for a spin. It does a terrific job of syncing across multiple platforms, but until Google adds more features beyond what Hangouts is capable of right now, other competing services will continue to reign supreme.
Installing Hangouts on Android requires user consent for the app to read and send SMS messages before installation already, so the update might be a matter of flipping a switch. An update for iOS will be a different story, however, given the platform’s closed nature. That might not be a huge deal, especially since iMessage is already running on iOS out of the box.
