Assassin’s Creed Creator Departs Ubisoft Again, This Time Fired

Assassin’s Creed Creative Director Patrice Désilets and publisher Ubisoft have reached yet another bump in their unstable relationship. Désilets has left the publisher yet again, and this time against his will.

Désilets left the company in 2010 after the completion of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood to work on other projects, and he was eventually picked up by THQ in 2011. However, the studio and his two projects, code named 1666 and Underdog, were purchased by Ubisoft Montreal during the THQ auction back in January, and Désilets found his way back into the fold with his former employer.

Ubisoft has issued a statement on matter, but declined to officially comment on the status of the two games. Sources believe they have been canceled.

“The acquisition of THQ Montréal in January allowed Ubisoft to welcome 170 experienced developers, including Patrice Désilets, to our existing and renowned workforce. Unfortunately, since the acquisition, the good faith discussions between Patrice and Ubisoft aimed at aligning Patrice’s and the studio’s visions have been inconclusive. As a result, Patrice has left the studio. Our priorities remain with the teams already hard at work on projects in development. They are at the root of Ubisoft Montréal’s past and future successes.”

Désilets, who Ubisoft said was “very happy to look forward to working with again” in January, believes he was wrongfully “terminated.”

“Contrary to any statements made earlier today, this morning I was terminated by Ubisoft.  I was notified of this termination in person, handed a termination notice and was unceremoniously escorted out of the building by two guards without being able to say goodbye to my team or collect my personal belongings.

This was not my decision.

Ubisoft’s actions are baseless and without merit. I intend to fight Ubisoft vigorously for my rights, for my team and for my game.”

Take this as a lesson for all of you college graduates about to make it out into the world. Never burn your bridges, because you never know what twist of fate will land you back with an ex-employer.
