HTC may quietly be working on two Windows RT tablets, according to a new rumor that was published by PhoneArena on Tuesday. Apparently the names actually have meaning: the number may represent the screen size, a 7-inch and a 12-inch tablet, and the R may stand for the “RT” version of Windows.

So far, however, Windows RT devices have had a slow uptake as users gravitate toward Android or iOS powered devices, or even Microsoft’s more powerful Windows 8 operating system. The OS is super limited, especially when it comes to applications, and HTC will need to convince consumers what it can do to change those views. Perhaps a low price point can be a compelling start.

PhoneArena said the R7 is expected to ship with a quad-core Snapdragon 800 clocked at 2.3GHz, 16GB of expandable storage, a 13-megapixel camera and 2GB of RAM. The R12 will reportedly pack the same hardware but with a larger 12-inch 2048 x 1536-pixel display. Apparently both tablets will eventually hit the market with 4G LTE support, which means we could see them land on carriers with subsidy options.

Right now HTC is allegedly planning to get the devices on store shelves by October 13. Obviously ship dates change frequently, so a Q3 launch is probably the safest bet on the rumor right now. Keep this in mind, however: HTC exited the tablet market after it launched the Flyer and has so far only said that it’s watching how others perform before it launches its own. If sales of Windows RT-based devices are any hint, HTC probably shouldn’t be jumping on the bandwagon.
