Amazon Appstore for Android Now Live in China

Amazon’s Android application store is now available where Google’s own paid app store isn’t: China.

The company already offered Chinese residents an option to buy eBooks but, until now, applications were not availabl. To be fair, Google Play is also available in China but, according to Reuters, only free applications are available for download. By contrast, Amazon will offer both pay-for and free applications.

The Kindle Fire and the Kindle are still not available in China, so users will need to install Amazon’s Appstore for Android on a different device. The online retailer may be the only U.S. company offering paid Android apps in China, but it’s not necessarily a given success story. Instead, Reuters warns that there are “hundreds of local rivals” that offer similar services, including pirated Android apps.
