President Obama on Wednesday officially nominated Tom Wheeler as the new head of the Federal Communications Commission. Wheeler will follow in the footsteps of the former chairman Julius Genachowski.

“Tom knows this stuff inside and out,” President Obama said in an announcement obtained by Bloomberg. Wheeler “is the only member of both the cable television and the wireless industry hall of fame. So he’s like the Jim Brown of telecom or the Bo Jackson of telecom.” Commissioner Robert McDowell also offered support for the appointment.

“I am pleased that the President has chosen to nominate Tom Wheeler to be Chairman of the FCC,” McDowell said. “I have had the privilege of knowing Tom for several years. He brings with him a deep understanding of the marketplace from his many years of leadership and experience in the information, communications and technology sectors.”

There is concern that Wheeler’s past includes activities as a lobbyist, however, and some folks are calling for the Senate to take this into consideration before green lighting Wheeler’s appointment.
