Skype calls can now be initiated directly from an Outlook.com inbox, Microsoft announced recently. The service is currently available in the United Kingdom but Microsoft said support will soon be available in the United States and in Germany. The company is billing the current service as a “Skype preview” but users can still start Skype video and audio calls right from their inbox.
“Even with the best email service, sometimes text isn’t enough,” Microsoft said. “We all face those situations where it’s just easier to jump on a call to talk something through. Sometimes that quick call can accomplish more than a long email reply. That’s why we are bringing Skype audio and video calling to your Outlook.com inbox.”
In order to get started, users will need to download a browser plugin for Firefox, Chrome or Internet Explorer and link it with their existing Skype account. Once you’ve merged your two accounts, Skype buddies will be available as contacts in your Outlook.com address book and you can quickly initiate a video or voice call. Microsoft and Skype said the service will be available for every Outlook.com user eventually.
