WayForward is bringing the first Shantae game to the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console this June. The series creator, Matt Bozon, confirmed the release on his Twitter page.
The game was originally published by Capcom during the final days of the Game Boy Color, so not many got a chance to play it. In fact, not many physical copies exist, and they can sell for up to $800 on the secondhand market.
Shantae enjoys a cult status and has a reputation for being a lost masterpiece. It has seen a surge in popularity recently with the sequel, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, scoring big as a DSi game. Now, many gamers will finally get the opportunity to legitimately play both games in the series on a single device.
I have not played the first Shantae, so I don’t have an opinion on it, but if it is half as fun as its sequel, then sign me up as a definite for this download.
A third game, Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, is currently in development for the Nintendo 3DS eShop. The game will strip Shantae of her genie powers, and she will instead have to resort to pirate techniques to get them back.
