Indie Developers Turn to Crowdfunding to Save Homeworld Series

One of the forgotten victims in the whole THQ auction mess was the Homeworld series. I have to admit, it completely slipped under my radar as well. I know the series and the games, but I was unaware of THQ being the owners. At any rate, nobody decided to purchase the rights to the franchise […]

Saints Row? Darksiders? South Park? Here’s Who Bought What From THQ

Now that the dust has settled on THQ’s breakup and subsequent auction, we have a pretty clear image of where each franchise did (or didn’t) land. We’re breaking down where each of the studios and their franchises went, and how much they were purchased for. Relic goes to Sega for $26.6 million. Relic is the […]

THQ Broken Up and Sold Off, Final Letter to Employees Emerges

THQ has now been broken up into little bits and sold off to gaming publishers around the world. Their assets are in virtual transit, and the publishing brand no longer exists. The news was delivered to employees by way of a letter from the now former THQ President Jeff Rubin and CEO Brian Farrell. Kotaku received […]

All of the remaining assets owned by the former publisher THQ have been auctioned off, but one huge question mark has been hanging over one of its most classic series.

Homeworld, a space-opera RTS, has been bought by Gearbox. The same studio that brought about the wonderful Borderlands and the abysmal Aliens Colonial: Marines. The confirmation first came from independent publishers Team Pixel, who created a crowd-funding campaign to land the series back into the hands of fans. However, despite a successful campaign, the funding came up short as Team Pixel lost out to the mystery victor.

In an update to the Kickstarter page, the team announced they will be issuing refunds to those who donated:

“Homeworld will escape the THQ bankruptcy to a new home; however, that home will not be with teamPixel, LLC. The auction for the Homeworld license ended April 15, 2013, and while we reached qualified bidder status for the bankruptcy auction, we were unable to raise the necessary funds to remain competitive against the other parties at the auction.”

Gearbox made things official this afternoon when they announced the acquisition of the Homeworld license.

Gearbox Software has prevailed as the highest bidder in the acquisition of the Homeworld franchise from THQ. Brian Martel, Gearbox Software’s Chief Creative Officer, has great love and respect for Relic’s brilliant, fun and innovative game and personally spearheaded the acquisition.

Homeworld fans are excited. They’re also nervous, given the travesty that became Aliens: Colonial Marines. This could be really, really bad news, folks.

The auction for the last of THQ’s remaining assets pulled in over $7 million total. These included other hot franchises like Darksiders and Red Faction, which did not sell back during the first round of auctioning back in January.
