After Twitter tackles music the company wants to move over to video, according to Bloomberg. The social network is reportedly in talks with with both Viacom and NBCUniversal to introduce “high quality video content” to its platform. Right now, Twitter is “close” to reaching agreements—the new initiative would seemingly play TV clips on its site alongside ads.
The overall goal is to convince users to spend more time on Twitter, while building on existing partnerships. One possible scenario would be to ramp up Twitter’s ability to provide news coverage, Bloomberg said. As terrible situations break across the world, the social network has become one of the best sources for reliable and up to date news. Adding a video element would make the platform more attractive to partners and other interested parties.
In addition to possible news video, the site could also see other streaming video on its site, people familiar with Twitter’s plans said. The social network is often a breeding ground of discussion concerning TV shows, so it only makes sense for Twitter to try and capitalize on interest. It’s unclear how video will stream into a user’s news feed, or if Twitter will host a completely separate site (video.twitter.com is a possibility).
