Job Listing Suggests iPhone 5S Will Pack Fingerprint Scanner

It seems that every rumor before most recent iPhone launches has suggested that Apple’s planning to launch a fingerprint scanner on the iPhone at some point. The rumors existed before the iPhone 5, which of course does not offer that technology, and they were rekindled again as new pundits started to offer insight into the iPhone 5S.

Now a job listing on Apple’s website calls for someone to craft “low-level code to configure and control hardware.” The job is seeking an engineer in Melbourne, Florida at the firm’s design center. That’s the same town where AuthenTec is based, a company that sold Apple some security technology last year. The company creates fingerprint scanners, so it seems plausible that the new engineer will work hand-in-hand with AuthenTec if the iPhone 5S is to offer the technology.

Reports suggest that Apple will include the fingerprint scanner under the home button and that it will allow users to unlock their iPhone with a simple tap of their finger. The move could potentially remove any need for a pin-code password.
