Obsidian Entertainment’s Chris Avellone will be joining forces with inXile Entertainment to help develop their upcoming RPG, Torment: Tides of Numenera. inXile promised that Avellone would jump aboard if the game’s Kickstarter reached a whopping $3.5 million before the end of the campaign. With the goal reached and only 28 hours to go as of writing, it looks like Avellone is going to be one busy man this year.
Avellone was once a designer at the legendary RPG team Black Isle Studios and acted as lead designer on the game’s spiritual predecessor, Planescape: Torment. The popular game won Avellone respect and praise around the gaming industry, and fans were hoping that he would return to the spiritual successor should it ever be completed.
Hopes were mixed with Avellone and Obsidian lending aid to inXile to create their current project, Wastelands 2, but then Obsidian launched their own successful Kickstarter campaign with Project Eternity, which will be taking much of his time.
In regards to Torment: Tides of Numenera, Avellone will act as a creatie supervisor of sorts, reviewing all creative elements of the game such as characters, stories, and themes. His work will not interfere with Project Eternity, inExile was quick to point out.
At $3.5 million and just under two days left, it looks like Torment: Tides of Numenera will be emerging as the second most successful game ever to come from Kickstarter. The first is of course Project Eternity, which pulled in just shy of $4 million. Either way, Avellone is sitting on top of the independent world with three huge Kickstarter titles to his name.
